These lovely Knightia specimens are from the Green River
Formation in Wyoming which has yielded a wealth of specimens over the years. I
purchased these from the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research in Hill
City South Dakota many years ago.
One fish is about 3 1/4” long by 1” in height at its longest points. The entire
specimen is 3 1/8” high by 4 5/8” wide. The other fish is about 2 1/2” long by
3/4” in height at its longest points. The entire specimen is 3 1/4” high by 4”
wide.
These two fossils displaying a single fossilized Knightia each, that had died
after a volcanic eruption buried it in ash. The fossils are approximately 50
Million years old. One is really unique due to the very large COPROLITE (fish
Poop) that is also preserved on the fossil.
The label from the Institute attached to the back of the specimens is intact and
reads:
Knightia sp.
Fossil Butte Member
Green River Formation
Eocene
Lincoln County
