PHACOPS SPECULATOR TRILOBITE
This is a nice prone example of Phacops speculator (Order Phacopida, Suborder:
Phacopina; Superfamily: Phacopoidea; Family: Phacopidae), a classic trilobite of
the Devonian strata of Morocco (Hamar Laghdad Formation – near Erfoud, Morocco).
This specimen has been expertly laboratory prepared with pneumatic chisel and
air abrasion. It has a natural dark brown exoskeleton, nicely preserved, and
contrasting beautifully with the light reddish-brown matrix.
As a member of Order Phacopida, this trilobite shares the distinction of
schizochroal eyes only with other members of the Order. Note the good
preservation of many facets in the eyes of this trilobite.
The trilobite measures 2.7 inches long on 4 by 3 inch matrix.
